Planning & Evaluative Commentary
From the two posters that I have created they would both be made by different film institutions. one of the leading institutions that would make film noir films is Universal and modern Hollywood would be made by MGM.
My target audience for these two films would be different, my target audience for my film noir films are the niche fans which are the minority of people which are interested into this, the way I made sure that they would be interested in my film is by capturing the codes and conventions of the typical film noir film and also the modern Hollywood hybrid.
I carried out research by watching a documentary about film noir which gave me good insight into what they are based on and also what type of characters are involved in these types of films, from this I had learnt that there are female characters called femme fatales, therefore to keep the interest of my audience I had inco-operated a femme fatale in my poster. To broaden my knowledge about the femme fatale and what kind of characters they are I watched a very famous film noir called Double Indemnity, this enhanced my knowledge about the characters involved and their personalities which I learnt of them to be cold hearted characters, I tried to portray this in my poster by posing the women looking fierce and also by holding a gun showing that they were superior to men also I portrayed the doomed hero which is the typical film noir character looking down towards the ground to really capture and enhance the personality of the character of a doomed hero and how their fate lies within the film. Other research that I had carried out was my draft poster that I made this because it gave me a clear insight into what my poster would look like and how each character would be displayed, my draft poster also helped me organize my final poster in a carefully structured manner.
The research that I carried out for my Hollywood hybrid was by looking at other film posters such as Sherlock Holmes to gain a clear insight into how modern Hollywood hybrid posters were displayed also the role of women in these, I also watched Sherlock Holmes to see the comparison between the role of women in film noir and them in Hollywood films. I also carried out informal research because I had watched many Hollywood films this gave me a clear idea of what to involve in my own poster and how it would maintain the interest of the audience because Hollywood films are aimed at range of people it also gave me a a good idea of what would attract the audience.
In my poster of film noir I tried to communicate many different conventions of what would be involved in a film noir film such as the femme fatale that I had found during my research and how I would portray the femme fatale the maximize and show off her personality in the picture, I had learnt that the femme fatale character was describe in the documentary that I watched as 'flirtatious, with red rouged lips and a sexy manipulative person '. In my poster I tried to capture this as much as possible by posing my character at an angle the way I portrayed her flirtatiousness was by putting her hand on the 'doomed hero' this also represents how she can be manipulative and can lure men in. Another way that she is portrayed as manipulative person is by the way she is looking deep into his eyes this resembles the fact that she can almost have a hypnosis power which can be deadly towards the 'doomed hero'. Also in my poster I have shown a doomed hero which is portrayed as a character with no future and easily convinced with the greed for money, alcohol and women. The way that I captured my doomed hero to be in my poster by making him see vulnerable by manipulating the lighting in a way that would make him see 'doomed' by the dark lighting I have used. The way that I have portrayed my 'doomed hero' to be a person with no future is be making my femme fatale point a gun at him showing that he is in danger also by posing a hopeless expression on his face which shows that he had nowhere to go and cannot escape from reality which is the hopeless side of life.
By analyzing other film noir posters I saw that they dark bold fonts which stand out to the audience I also tried to have this in my poster, I have a large bold font in the center of the poster to stand out the audience and capture their attention, I have also used the color red to show the element of romance and love brought to the film by the character of the femme fatale.
Some of the props that I had used in my film noir poster was the gun, the gun highlights the element of violence that is in film noir. During the time of 1940's the gun contributed towards many deaths and was considered a dangerous weapon I have included this to maintain realism and to keep it original just like the actual film noir during the 1940's. Another prop that I have used in my film noir poster is the coat that the doomed hero, I have used this prop to maintain originality because many men during the 1940's wore this type of coat it was also worn because I wanted to show the kind of fashion during the 1920's and also to keep the attention of the audience because they would want to watch something that is original.
In my Hollywood hybrid poster I also tried to communicate many of the codes and conventions for these types of films, I had done this by researching and analyzing various posters one of them being Sherlock Holmes from this I had learnt various things such as how women were to be portrayed, in Sherlock Holmes's poster I saw that women were displayed as vulnerable characters, characters that needed saving and looking after by the male dominance this can be seen in Sherlock's poster because we can see that the two male characters are the central focus of the poster.and the female character shown to be the at the top and shown as less important this can be deduced from the size of her picture. From what I had learnt about the portrayal of women Sherlock Holmes's poster, I tried to apply to my own one.
In my poster we can see from the women facial expression that she is in danger immediately showing that women are more exposed to danger than men, also I have put her image at the back of the poster portraying her symbol of status in the film. Another way that I have shown the female character exposed to danger is by merging her in with the background picture and making her look as if she is fading away into the fire, I have used the fire for a symbolic purpose to show how the women is is danger. Also from the tagline we can see that the central focus of rescue, protection against harm/evil is more focused on the female, I have carefully though about the tagline; 'survival is her only option' I have purposefully inputted the word 'her' to show that the female character is the one that needs to survive and that there is not much focus on the male character surviving because we know that the male is a dominant character in Hollywood Hybrid films and play the role of the hero. Also from what I had learnt from the analysis of Sherlock Holmes's poster we can see that the male is shown to be protecting the female character. I have also involved this element in my poster, this can be clearly seen because I have made my character pose in the center of the poster with a gun and is also in front of the female showing that he is protecting her. One of the main props used in my Hollywood poster is the gun, the gun is an extremely iconic and versatile weapon it was also used in film noir films. I have included the gun for the main reason to show that there is some action to the film also to show there is some kind of violence aspect to the film, I purposefully did this also to attract a wider range of audiences because then more teenagers will be interested in the film is there is some type of action this will also maximize the profit if a greater number of people watch it.
The facial expressions used in my poster vary; for the woman she is shown as scared as under threat this again embraces the idea of woman constantly being under threat and more exposed to harm.
In my film noir poster, it changed from the drafts in many several ways, one of the way it has changed is the photographs, I changed the photographs because I thought that they didn't effectively communicate the conventions of film noir effectively to the audience therefore I changed it to get across the idea of the doomed hero and the femme fatale in a better way. Another thing that I had changed was the type of font from the original draft poster because I limited experience and knowledge of the software that we were using which was Photoshop and I was new to this therefore I didn't fully understand all the different functions available and it took some time i getting used to. In my Hollywood hybrid poster I also made several changes for a range of different reasons. One of the changes that I had made was the main image, i changed this to a man facing directly at the camera, I had made this change to the poster because then it would enhance the themes of Hollywood hybrid films and it could portray a greater number of genres so that people can actually tell that the film will vary and have a range of different genres involved in it.
Some of the different things that went well well in my film noir poster were that it portrayed the codes and conventions of film noir films very clearly and the things involved in film noir. For example it clearly shows the femme fatale, we know that the femme fatal as a character which is a sly person and after doomed heroes money, this is shown in my poster because I have manipulated the lighting to show that the femme fatale is on the 'bright side' but the 'doomed hero' is on the 'dark side'. Overall I am pleased with the standard of my film noir poster. Some of the things that could have been better in my film noir poster is my editing of the poster such as the the angle of lighting and the background have been better.
In my Hollywood hybrid poster one of the things that went well and I am happy with is the overall editing and that it looked professional and the photography of the poster.
Some of the things that could have been better is that I thought the pictures on the poster and the information could have been more organized more clearly so that the audience can clearly see everything.
